1 John 1:5–2:2 (NLT) — 5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
1. God is Light
- Light is POWER - Paul says that He dwells in unapproachable light.
- Light is Life - John says that this life brought light to everyone. There is a connection between light and life. There is no death in God.
- Light is Truth - There is no: Hypocrisy, fakeness, deception, trickery, ignorance with God.
- Light is Moral Perfection - He’s absolutely the definition of GOOD.
2. In Him there is no darkness.
- 1 John 1:6 - So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.
- What does it mean to live in spiritual darkness?
- Ignorance - You don’t know that what you are doing is wrong.
- Hypocrisy - You are hiding what you are doing.
- Downplay - You don’t call it what it is.
- Deliberate sin - You don’t care what God thinks, you call light/dark and dark/light
- Isaiah 5:20 (NLT) — 20 What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
- Two lies people believe about sin.
- They don’t have any.
- There’s nothing they can do about it.
3. He is faithful and just to forgive us.
- 1 John 1:8-10 NLT - 8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
- How do we step into the light? Confess!
- He has become our advocate.
- He is for you.
- He is your lawyer.
- Hebrews 4:15–16 (NLT) — 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
4. So that you will not sin
- He gives us several powerful tools to be victorious over sin.
- CALL IT WHAT IT IS
- Don’t try to say that your sin is anything other than just sin.
- Don’t try to justify it by qualifying yourself for it, almost like you are entitled to it.
- CONFESS
- Many of us miss the power of confession. We don’t realize how powerful it can be.
- Confess means to SAY THE SAME THING.
- Acknowledge it first to yourself.
- Then acknowledge it to God.
- Then acknowledge it to others.
- RUN
- If you stay in the place of your temptation, you remain on the battlefield. The way to win the battle is to leave the battlefield!
- RESIST
- The Word of God.
- Praying in the Spirit.
